Guiding NHS Trusts Towards Net Zero

With NHS England’s target to reach net zero for directly controlled emissions by 2040, net zero is on every NHS Trust’s agenda.  Our role as mechanical and electrical design engineers is to support our NHS clients on their journeys towards net zero.

Our in-house sustainability division, Net Zero UK, includes building physics engineers, sustainability engineers and building & energy modellers.  They have worked alongside our mechanical and electrical engineers to help a number of NHS Trusts identify how they can reduce their energy usage and resultant carbon emissions.  Examples include Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, where we identified up to 85% of carbon savings, whilst at Liverpool Heart & Chest NHS Foundation Trust, we identified up to 92% of carbon savings.

The key to our approach is developing a detailed building and energy computerised model of each building, using complex IES-VE software, allowing us to undertake dynamic assessments of various scenarios and provide detailed reports.  Our team looks at the impact of different potential solutions on thermal comfort, daylight, energy usage and carbon emissions.  We take a fabric first approach using our three-point framework, which ensures passive design is prioritised:

  1. Lean – reducing energy demand through a fabric first approach eg changes to the building insulation, cladding and fenestration.
  2. Clean – integrating and specifying efficient and low carbon building systems
  3. Green – considering renewable technology and energy generation.

Come to Exhibition Stand H17 at Healthcare Estates to meet the S I Sealy team and discuss how we can support your Trust.
