Phil Murphy celebrates 50 years at S I Sealy

This month, we are proud to celebrate our Technical Director, Phil Murphy, on reaching an extraordinary milestone of 50 years at S I Sealy.

Phil began his journey with us back in September 1975 as a trainee mechanical engineer, a time when producing hand drawn to scale drawings was standard practice. Over the decades, he has grown into one of the most respected Mechanical Engineers in the Northwest, currently serving as our Healthcare Technical Director.

Throughout his career, Phil has not only witnessed but embraced major industry changes, especially the rise of digital technology. He has seamlessly adapted to working with digital tools such as Dalux or BIM360 to comment and review 3D models, demonstrating his commitment to staying at the forefront of engineering innovation.

Phil’s portfolio at S I Sealy is both vast and impressive. In the 1980s, he worked on the ERNIE Building in Blackpool, (Home to the Premium Bonds Computer) a four-storey hexagonal office complex, one of the largest plantrooms he has ever designed, featuring four 15,000-litre storage vessels and heat pump chillers. Decades later, he contributed his expertise as the design authority on the Palace of Westminster’s major plant upgrade works.

During the COVID pandemic, Phil was instrumental in delivering a 26-bed Acute Assessment Unit at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, where the full design was completed within just five weeks and the project was handed over only 16 weeks after appointment, making it one of the fastest-tracked projects in our company’s history.

To celebrate Phil’s incredible contributions, we recently held a special celebration in his honour. Colleagues past and present came together to toast his remarkable tenure. As part of the celebrations, we proudly announced the creation of the Philip Murphy Award, which will be awarded to team members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to developing themselves and those around them, embodying our internal culture just as Phil has over the last 50 years.

Reflecting on his milestone, Phil shared: “I want to take a moment to thank the many people who have been part of this journey during my 50 years at S I Sealy. To my colleagues past and present thank you for your support, your camaraderie, and for making this place more than just a workplace.”

Managing Director, Daniel Madden, added: “On behalf of everyone at S I Sealy, I would like to say how delighted we are to celebrate this special occasion with Phil. He has been at the heart of the company for 50 years, a truly remarkable achievement. His skill, precision, and unwavering leadership have shaped not only our projects, but also our people. This is our first 50-year employee, and it reflects the kind of community we have here. Thank you, Phil, for all your hard work.”
