Theatres 1 to 8 and Ophthalmology Theatres 1 & 2, 3&4, Royal Bolton Hospital

Our team was appointed to survey and assess the theatre plant condition and capacity at the Royal Bolton Hospital. The assessment included eight orthopaedic theatres and two ophthalmology theatres. A full condition appraisal was conducted for each theatre, evaluating them against current HBN and HTM standards, and a feasibility report was produced along with options for upgrading or replacing the theatres.

A modular offsite theatre complex was proposed to facilitate the transfer of services, allowing for the decanting of the existing theatres and to establish a long-term strategy for the refurbishment.

The surveys revealed that significant infrastructure upgrades were necessary for the mechanical and electrical services to support any future refurbishments. Our team developed a phasing strategy to determine how these upgrades could be completed while keeping as many theatres operational as possible, thereby minimising service disruption in the department.
