Barton Moss Secure Care Centre, Eccles

Client: Salford City Council

Budget: £10m

Completed: 2017

Barton Moss provides secure accommodation for children. We were responsible for the building services design of the initial secure accommodation as an extension to the Park House education facility.

Our involvement at Barton Moss continued in the 1990s with the design of what was considered to be the first generation of modern juvenile secure facilities working to “Design Guide 2000”. This provided full purpose-built accommodation for 12 young people, together with associated educational and sport facilities and a complete internal upgrade of the existing secure accommodation.

The latest major development at Barton Moss, for which we have provided the detailed M&E design, has seen the removal of all the non-purpose built accommodation and the creation of an additional 12 secure bedrooms, with the option to extend to a further six bedrooms; and incorporate vocational facilities and extensive staff facilities at first floor level.

The project was designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. We designed a range of renewable and energy saving technologies such as rainwater recycling, air source heat pumps and solar hot water heating. We incorporated an integrated building services management system; the data for which is used as part of the in-house education programme.
